Prof. Stefan Homburg, a prominent critic and scientist who distinguished himself through his outspoken words even during the Corona crisis, is questioning the drought alarm reports. He analyzes the official data of the German Weather Service and comes to a completely different conclusion: Instead of water scarcity, the numbers show an opposite trend.
In the 12-month period from August 2023 to July 2024 (precisely the time in which Lower Saxony's Environment Minister C. Meyer expressed his "concerns"), record precipitation levels were even recorded since measurements began in 1881. The long-term trend to date indicates, despite seasonal fluctuations, an increasing amount of precipitation, particularly in the last two years.
In his analysis, Prof. Homburg also exposes the official representation of groundwater levels, particularly the orange-marked measuring point "Otternhaken 4," which signals an allegedly very low water level on the map. From his perspective, this color highlighting is misleading, as colors have a strong effect on public perception but can create false impressions without context.
To get to the bottom of the matter, Homburg evaluated the measurement data history of this station since 1959 – with a surprising result: The current water level is by no means in the critical range, but rather moves within a completely normal fluctuation corridor in historical comparison. The alarming color coding thus turns out to be an unreliable, or rather fake, basis for dramatic statements about a groundwater crisis.
